Alexander (Alex) Charles Witkowski was a caring father and husband with an extraordinary work ethic. He passed away on September 8, 2022, in New York City, where he was also born and lived his entire life. Alex was 79 years old.
He was born to Anna and Alexander on May 3, 1943. He attended St. Vincent Ferrer Grammar School and was an altar boy at St. Vincent Ferrer Church. His opportunity to attend Regis High School on full academic scholarship was a turning point in Alex’s life for which he was always grateful. Over the many decades following, Alex never stopped working and taking on new challenges, obtaining numerous academic degrees in the fields of Engineering, Business Administration and Finance, and Law, as well as credentials and licensing in various trade specialties, including Master Electrician. He received great satisfaction from building and fixing things and discovering ways to make optimal improvements to everything.
On February 6, 1965, Alex married Helen Elizabeth at St. Vincent Ferrer Church and they had a long life together with their four children - Alexander U. Witkowski, Timothy X. Witkowski, Dianne M. Witkowski, and Lisa S. Witkowski. His wife preceded Alex’s death by two and a half years. He was a tireless and great support to Helen during her illness that was inspiring to his children. Alex is survived by his four children.
Throughout his life, Alex was a proud New Yorker and experienced all that the city had to offer - running around the Central Park reservoir was a passion in his younger years and museums and cultural institutions were always a part of his life. He was eccentric and followed his own interests and passions throughout his life, which changed and evolved over the years. Alex enjoyed experiencing the best things that his resources allowed, whether it was taking exquisite pictures with a Hasselblad camera during the many decades he was a photography enthusiast or enjoying a steak at Peter Lugar’s with his family. During recent years, Alex was able to retell his many stories about his life and share his opinions and observations about everything under the sun with a new audience: his two grandchildren, Amanda and Aidan, children of his son Timothy and his wife Diane, who were also married at St. Vincent Ferrer Church.
Alex will be sorely missed by his family and everyone who had the opportunity to have a deep conversation with him. A wake is scheduled from 6-8 pm on September 20, 2022, at John Krtil Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 am on September 21, 2022, at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, with which Alex has had a close and lifelong connection.
In lieu of flowers, Alex would have appreciated a donation to Regis High School in Manhattan.
